Prevention and Awareness

Preventing Homelessness and increasing awareness

B.HUG runs homelessness road shows in youth clubs and secondary schools in Brent. We want to inform young people who are at the turning points in their life of the realities of homelessness, to ensure they are aware of the support available to them should they find themselves in a situation that can lead to them being homeless. The Homelessness Road show is a way of increasing awareness of homelessness. The Road Shows are delivered by people who have a personal experience of homelessness.  If you want to find out more please call 020 8965 2561.

A recent B.HUG Homeless Road Show Report

"Students from years 10 and 11 were invited to a one hour show on Homelessness in November. This was organised by a former student, Floyd, who contacted Miss Babin in order to come back to JKBTC to speak to students about his own experience of homelessness. This was a very powerful event where students could hear three volunteers talk about their real life experience. Information on what support is available was given out to all students should they experience difficulties at home. Students were invited to take part in a role play where they had to explain to a housing officer why they wanted to leave home and the issue of intentionality and its consequences were clarified. Students were given as very accurate picture of the potential dangers awaiting them should they choose not to obey their parents or guardians rules and decide to make themselves intentionally homeless. The implications and realties of life and money matters away from home were very thoroughly covered. Students were presented with individuals cases and they had to be the judges of whether or not the council would provide them with interim accommodation. “It was a great show; I would definitely recommend it to anyone! I wish we could have access to more events of this kind in school” (Shawn Year 11). Many students stayed for an informal chat after the event as they felt truly moved by the speakers."
